What Crossing the Chasm does well
Geoffrey Moore's 1991 book built on the Technology Adoption Life Cycle, which splits a market into innovators, early adopters, the early majority, the late majority and laggards. Moore's insight was that a chasm separates early adopters, who buy vision, from the early majority, who buy proven results and want references from people like them.
- It names the most dangerous point in a startup's life and explains why it happens.
- It tells founders to win a narrow beachhead segment before going broad.
- Its positioning and whole-product ideas are still the standard for B2B go-to-market.

Finding motivated buyers, qualifying them, and becoming the vendor they call first are the Earn boxes (6 to 9), and that is where most founders get stuck. We call this the Traction Trap.
